Ursuline Academy in Dedham Massachusetts boasts a rich history. It’s a story that began in Charlestown in 1819. The Ursuline Sisters founded the first academy in the Boston area. Tragically anti-Catholic sentiment led to the destruction of the original convent in 1834. The sisters were forced to leave. However the Ursuline spirit would not be extinguished.
Decades later in 1946 Cardinal Richard Cushing invited the Ursulines back. They established a new school for girls. This marked the rebirth of Ursuline Academy in Boston. The academy thrived. By 1957 it had outgrown its space. It relocated to its current 28-acre estate on Dedham’s Federal Hill.
The ciborium I mentioned earlier? It’s a powerful symbol. It survived the Charlestown convent riots. Sisters bravely hid it. It’s a reminder of the obstacles overcome.
