The Ursulanacht-Denkmal commemorates a night of rebellion, the Ursulanacht, which translates to St. Ursula’s Night. On October 21, 1371, Lüneburg’s citizens rose up against their duke. The Ursulanacht-Denkmal, erected in 1996 by the Lüneburg Citizens’ Association, captures this pivotal moment. The inscription reads “Bürgerstolz bricht Fürstenwillkür” which means “Civic pride breaks princely arbitrariness”. This uprising was a turning point in Lüneburg’s history.
