Urayasu’s story is fascinating. Once, it was a small fishing village. It supplied Edo now Tokyo with seafood. Nori seaweed and clams were abundant. These were key parts of the traditional Japanese diet.

The Edo period saw Urayasu under the direct control of the Tokugawa shogunate. After the Meiji Restoration in 1868, it became part of Chiba Prefecture. In 1889, Urayasu Village was officially created. It became a town in 1909.

World War II brought tragedy. Many Urayasu residents died in the 1944 Bombing of Tokyo. But Urayasu rebuilt. The 1960s and 70s saw massive landfill projects. These expanded Urayasu into Tokyo Bay. Public housing and infrastructure grew. Urayasu became part of the Keiyō Industrial Zone. This spans Chiba’s Tokyo Bay coast.

In 1971, fishing ended in Urayasu due to industrialization. But a new chapter began. Urayasu gained city status in 1981. Then, in 1983, Tokyo Disneyland opened. It put Urayasu on the map as a major entertainment destination.

The 21st century brought further expansion. Tokyo DisneySea opened in 2001. New Disney hotels followed. However, disaster struck in 2011. The earthquake, tsunami, and Fukushima nuclear disaster greatly affected Urayasu. Soil liquefaction caused major damage. Repairs cost the city approximately ¥73.4 billion. But Urayasu showed its resilience. Tokyo Disneyland reopened shortly after.

Today, Urayasu has two distinct areas. There’s the original fishing village. It sits on the banks of the Sakai River. Then there’s Shin-Urayasu, the reclaimed land area. Shin-Urayasu has an American-inspired layout. Wide streets and modern apartments define it.

Urayasu is a sought-after residential area. Young families are drawn to its modern amenities. The city is a regional commercial center. Many residents commute to Tokyo for work. But The Oriental Land Company. It and businesses related to Tokyo Disney Resort are major local employers.

Urayasu has a humid subtropical climate. Warm summers and cool winters are typical. The average annual temperature is 15.6°C. Rainfall averages 1435 mm per year.

Urayasu is twinned with Orlando, Florida. This partnership began in 1989. It symbolizes the city’s connection to the world of entertainment.
