Have you ever wondered about the history of this land? You are standing on a piece of ground that has seen many empires rise and fall. Welcome to Uran Taluka, a subdistrict of Raigad, a district in the Konkan division of Maharashtra. It has been a place of conflict and trade for centuries, and its history is as colorful as its landscape.

Uran has played a pivotal role in the development of the region. The city name itself is derived from the Hindu goddess Uranavati. It was called Uruvan during the reign of Madhavrao I, the fourth Peshwa of the Maratha Empire. Later, it was given its present name, Uran, by the Portuguese and Ooran by the British.

The area was conquered by the Portuguese and British in the 16th to 19th centuries. Uran was subject to the Maratha princely states in the Maharashtra. The most notable figure who ruled from here was Kanhoji Angre, a famous Maratha Sarkhel, or Admiral in the 18th century. He battled European naval interests, securing the coastline for his kingdom.

The Uran wetlands, once home to numerous species of birds and reptiles, are a source of great biodiversity. They provided essential sustenance to the people of Uran.

Today, Uran Taluka primarily functions as a hub for fishing and agriculture, while also developing its special economic zone. The area is home to the largest container terminal in India, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port. It’s a crucial link in the global trade network.

The land has also been a source of resources for the Indian Navy, which maintains a naval base nearby. The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has a plant here as well. In addition, Uran has become a major industrial and manufacturing center housing companies like Grindwell Norton Limited.

Uran is a place where history lives on. It’s a testament to the resilience of the people who have called this place their home. Its beaches, temples, and the old military fort are remnants of a rich past. You are standing on grounds where the waves of history have broken, leaving behind its legacy. Take a moment to feel the weight of the past and the possibilities of its future.
