The fire was the deadliest attack on a gay club in U.S. history until the Orlando nightclub shooting. It’s impossible to fully grasp the magnitude of the tragedy without comprehending its context. In 1973, the LGBTQ+ community in New Orleans faced discrimination, and the UpStairs Lounge fire was a stark reminder of their vulnerability.
