Eager to dive into the world of comedy? The Upright Citizens Brigade awaits you. This isn’t just any theater. It’s a comedy institution with roots stretching back to Chicago.

Let’s journey back to 1996. Amy Poehler, Matt Besser, Ian Roberts, and Matt Walsh founded the Upright Citizens Brigade. They sought to create a comedy hub. Their vision materialized into theaters in both New York City and Los Angeles.

The Upright Citizens Brigade in Los Angeles quickly became a hot spot. It showcased improv, sketch comedy, and stand-up. Emerging talents found a stage. Established comedians graced the venue. UCB became synonymous with innovative comedy.

In 2005, the Upright Citizens Brigade expanded to Los Angeles. The theater found its home on Franklin Avenue in Hollywood. It seated 120 people. Every night offered a mix of comedy shows. Comedy Bang. Bang. joined the UCB family. It entertained audiences every Tuesday night.

The Upright Citizens Brigade is also a training center. Aspiring comedians learn improv and writing. Experienced instructors guide them. The curriculum equips students with skills. They need these tools to thrive in comedy.

The UCB faced challenges. The New York scene shifted. Financial issues arose. Yet, the Upright Citizens Brigade in Los Angeles persevered. It remained a sanctuary for comedy.

In March 2022, a new chapter began. Mike McAvoy and Jimmy Miller acquired UCB. They had the backing of Elysian Park. This breathed new life into the theater.

September 2022 marked a triumphant return. The Upright Citizens Brigade in Los Angeles reopened. Laughter filled the theater once more. The UCB Training Center welcomed aspiring comedians.

The Upright Citizens Brigade’s philosophy emphasizes the “game” of the scene. This approach is largely based on Del Close’s teachings. Students learn long-form improv. “The Harold” is a primary improvisational form.

Many famous faces honed their skills here. Aziz Ansari, Aubrey Plaza, and Donald Glover are among the notable alumni. Saturday Night Live often seeks talent from UCB.

The Upright Citizens Brigade has also ventured into screen. The original founders had two TV shows. Their show ASSSSCAT has been televised twice.
