High atop a hill, Upper Roxborough watches over Philadelphia. Have you ever wondered about this northwestern sentinel, a neighborhood seemingly apart yet deeply woven into the city’s fabric? Upper Roxborough isn’t just a collection of houses. It’s a place where the echoes of history mingle with the hum of modern life. Upper Roxborough’s roots run deep, predating the United States itself. The Lenape Indians once walked these lands, calling the area Manatawna. They forged a trail, the Manatawny, which would later become the vital Ridge Avenue, a central artery connecting Upper Roxborough to the heart of Philadelphia. By the late 1600s, European settlers recognized the area’s potential for farming and milling. German, English, and Scottish settlers began to cultivate the land, transforming it into a thriving agricultural hub. In 1690, the name shifted from Manatawna to Roxburgh, possibly a nod to Roxburghshire, Scotland, the ancestral home of early settler Andrew Robeson. By 1707, it evolved again into Roxborough Township. Upper Roxborough wasn’t immune to the turmoil of the American Revolution. In the fall and winter of 1777, the area witnessed fierce battles. After the war, Upper Roxborough experienced a resurgence, fueled by the industrial revolution. Waterways powered sawmills, paper mills, and cotton mills. Farmlands gradually gave way to residential streets lined with Victorian homes. The rise of mass media brought another transformation. In the 1950s, television and FM radio stations, drawn by Upper Roxborough’s hilly terrain and high elevation, erected their transmission towers here. Their red lights paint the night sky, a modern beacon in a historic landscape. Today, Upper Roxborough offers a unique blend of suburban tranquility and urban accessibility. Ridge Avenue, once a vital thoroughfare, now bustles with restaurants and local businesses. While much of lower Roxborough boasts historic row homes, Upper Roxborough developed largely after 1950, giving it a more suburban feel with larger lawns and garages. It’s a place where history whispers from every corner, where the past and present coexist in harmony.
