Consider Uppenberg, a district in Muenster. It is more than just a geographical location. Uppenberg is a vibrant tapestry woven from history, culture, and community.

Uppenberg lies in the city’s heart. It is nestled between Kinderhaus to the north and the Kreuzviertel. Uppenberg corresponds to statistical district 47. In 2018, it had a population of 9,135 residents. They occupied an area of 3.4 square kilometers. This resulted in a population density of 26,867 residents per hectare.

Uppenberg’s borders are defined by key routes. The Kanalstraße bounds it to the east. The York-Ring, Friesenring, and Cheruskerring define the south. The Steinfurter Straße marks the west. An undeveloped strip separates it from Kinderhaus to the north.

The district’s layout is diverse. The northern part of Muenster’s core extends into Uppenberg. The Schloss is about one and a half kilometers away. The city center is two to three kilometers distant. Agriculture dominates the western part of Uppenberg. The Stadtpark Wienburg shapes the eastern part. Densely built areas surround the Ring at the southern border. The Grevener Straße runs north to south.

Two streams traverse Uppenberg. The Kinderbach flows through the west toward Kinderhaus. The Muenstersche Aa flows past Uppenberg just beyond the Kanalstraße.

Uppenberg is further divided into Stadtzellen. These include Dreizehnerstraße, Nienkamp, Koburger Weg, Jahnstraße, and Langemarkstraße.

Uppenberg’s history is rich. It was once a rural community within Überwasser. In 1295, the Abbess of Überwasser transferred Gut Rötgering to Engelbert von Deckenbrock. This landscape once encompassed Kinderhaus and Kreuzviertel. Überwasser was incorporated into Muenster in 1903. Development began from Kreuzviertel. Kinderhaus grew into a suburb.

Uppenberg offers green spaces. The Stadtpark Wienburg is a popular recreational area. It has been there since 1987.

Sports facilities thrive here. Grün-Weiß Marathon is a well-known sports club. The Catholic Youth Sports Association DJK has a center near the Coburg open-air swimming pool. The Germania Campus hosts one of Muenster’s two public ice rinks in winter.

Several companies call Uppenberg home. The Nienkamp/Meßkamp industrial area hosts HauptPharma and Hengst. The Germania Brewery once operated here. Its grounds are now a mixed-use campus.

Uppenberg houses important public institutions. Fire Station 1 and the police headquarters are located here. The LWL operates a psychiatric clinic. The Prins-Claus Barracks of the Dutch Armed Forces are here. The Water and Shipping Directorate West is also in Uppenberg.

Education is a priority. The Pascal-Gymnasium and Dreifaltigkeitsschule are here. Numerous day care centers serve the community.

Uppenberg has good transport links. The Grevener Straße runs through Uppenberg. It connects Muenster’s center to Kinderhaus. The Steinfurter Straße forms the western edge. A former connecting railway served the Germania Brewery. Today, the route is a bike path and bus lane.

The city bus lines serve Uppenberg. Regional bus line 51 connects to Greven and the Muenster-Osnabrueck Airport.
