“Forever Undivided” That’s what the Treaty of Ribe declared in 1460. It united the Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein. The phrase “Up ewig ungedeelt” became a powerful symbol. It represented the intertwined fates of these lands.

Here we stand before a memorial commemorating a pivotal moment in Schleswig-Holstein’s history. March 24th 1848. On this day a provisional government was formed. It declared its allegiance to the German Confederation. This act ignited the Schleswig-Holstein Question. It was a long and complex dispute over the duchies’ allegiance. It pitted the Danish crown against German nationalists.

The Treaty of Ribe’s promise of “forever undivided” was invoked. German Schleswig-Holsteiners championed it. They sought union with their German brethren. Denmark however saw Schleswig as an integral part of its kingdom. The “Up ewig ungedeelt” became a rallying cry. It fueled the Schleswig-Holstein uprisings and wars.

The conflict involved major European powers. Prussia and Austria initially supported the German cause. They later withdrew their support. Denmark ultimately prevailed. The war ended in a stalemate. Schleswig and Holstein remained under Danish rule.

The “Up ewig ungedeelt” motto continued to resonate. It symbolized the desire for unity and independence. It reappeared during the 1920 plebiscite. Parts of Schleswig were then returned to Denmark. The division however remained. The motto’s legacy endures. It continues to inspire a sense of shared identity and history in Schleswig-Holstein. It reminds us of the enduring power of ideals and the complexities of national identity. It is a powerful reminder of the struggles and aspirations of this remarkable region.
