The University of the Philippines Cebu was founded in 1918. It started as the Junior College of Liberal Arts. Classes were first held at the Warwick Barracks. This location was near the Carbon Market.
In 1927, a two-story building was completed. UP President Rafael Palma inaugurated it in 1929. Act No. 4244 made the Junior College a permanent branch of UP. This allowed it to grow in the province.
During World War II, the college closed in 1941. The main building became an internment camp. It housed American and British civilians. Later, Japanese forces used it as a stockade. In 1945, the campus was returned to UP. Funds repaired the war-damaged buildings and athletic field.
UP Cebu restructured its academic programs. These programs were clustered into five disciplines. They included Management, Humanities, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Social Sciences, and the High School.
In 2010, UP Cebu College gained autonomy. In 2011, construction began on the new campus. This new campus is on a five-hectare lot. It is located in Cebu City’s South Road Properties. Today, it is home to the UP Professional Schools. UP Cebu became the 8th constituent university on October 27, 2016.
UP Cebu has changed its name eleven times. It started as the Junior College of Liberal Arts in 1918. In 1947, it became Cebu College in UP. By 1963, it was the UP Graduate School in Cebu. It was the UP Visayas Cebu College in 1987. In 2010, it was known as UP Cebu College. Finally, it became UP Cebu.
UP Cebu offers a variety of degree programs. The UP Cebu SRP campus focuses on professional schools. These schools offer programs like Master of Business Administration. They also offer Master of Science in Computer Science. You can also study Master of Education here. Another option is the Master of Science in Environmental Science.
Admission to UP Cebu is selective. Students must pass the University of the Philippines College Admission Test or UPCAT. The university aims to maintain high educational standards.
