Did Anton Welser ever imagine, as he commissioned the Unteres Schlösschen in 1544, that it would become a hub of art and music centuries later? This charming building, nestled in Bobingen just outside Augsburg, has witnessed a fascinating evolution. The Unteres Schlösschen began as a reflection of Bobingen’s burgeoning prosperity. It later passed into the hands of another prominent Augsburg family, the Fuggers. Octavianus Secundus Fugger, known for his artistic sensibilities, acquired the Unteres Schlösschen and its surrounding park in 1590. He transformed it into a magnificent country estate, a testament to the era’s opulence. Fast forward to the 18th century, and Baron von Zech left his mark on the Unteres Schlösschen. He renovated the building in the then-fashionable Rococo style. The stunning ceiling fresco, “Das Göttermahl” by Christian Erhard, in the baroque round hall is a relic of this era. The fresco depicts an ancient feast of the gods, with Poseidon, Hermes, Artemis, Aphrodite, and Ares in attendance. This artwork, once hidden beneath layers of paint, was rediscovered and restored, offering a glimpse into the Schlösschen’s vibrant past. The Unteres Schlösschen has served various purposes throughout its history. It has been a home for families, a shelter for children and mothers, and a refuge for refugees. Today, the Unteres Schlösschen stands as a testament to its resilience. Owned by the city of Bobingen since 1938, it underwent extensive renovations in the 1970s. Now, it serves as a cultural center, hosting concerts, art exhibitions, and lectures. The Piano & Voice music institute now fills the baroque round hall with melodies. Children’s choirs, a youth choir, and an adult choir all rehearse within these historic walls, breathing new life into the Unteres Schlösschen. The Unteres Schlösschen’s journey, from a wealthy merchant’s retreat to a cultural gem, is a testament to its enduring charm.
