Gazing upon Unserer Lieben Frau, one might hear whispers of emperors and pogroms. Unserer Lieben Frau, also known as the Church of Our Lady, stands proudly in Nuremberg’s Hauptmarkt. It’s a grand example of Brick Gothic architecture, commissioned by Emperor Charles IV. The church’s story begins with tragedy. In 1349, the Black Death ravaged Nuremberg. This led to a horrific pogrom against the city’s Jewish community. Their synagogue, which once stood on this very spot, was destroyed by order of Charles IV. He envisioned a grand market square, dominated by a magnificent church. Construction of Unserer Lieben Frau began in 1352 and was completed in 1362. The church’s west facade, a masterpiece of intricate detail, boasts a stunning porch and an elaborate clock known as the Männleinlaufen. Every day at noon, the mechanical figures within the clock spring to life. They depict Emperor Charles IV surrounded by the seven prince-electors, a commemoration of the Golden Bull of 1356. Inside, Unserer Lieben Frau houses a wealth of art, much of it salvaged from other churches. The Tucher Altar, originally from St. Vitus’ church, is a prime example. Two impressive monuments by Adam Kraft also grace the interior. The church miraculously survived the devastating bombing of Nuremberg during World War II, although heavily damaged. The nave walls and facade remained, allowing for a careful reconstruction. Today, Unserer Lieben Frau serves as a parish church and a poignant reminder of Nuremberg’s complex past. Every year, the church’s balcony provides the stage for the opening ceremony of the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt, a beloved Christmas tradition. As you stand before Unserer Lieben Frau, take a moment to reflect on its turbulent journey through history. From tragedy to triumph, it stands as a symbol of resilience and a testament to the enduring power of faith.
