Hidden within Augsburg’s bustling Lechhausen district, Unsere Liebe Frau church stands as a testament to resilience and faith. It’s a relatively young church in this ancient city. Unsere Liebe Frau wasn’t here during the Roman era, the Fugger dynasty’s reign, or even the Thirty Years’ War. Instead, it arose from the ashes of war, a beacon of hope in a city scarred by conflict. The original Unsere Liebe Frau, a modest structure built in 1928, served as a daughter church to St. Pankratius. In 1934, it gained its own parish, becoming a spiritual home for the growing community. This first church housed treasured artifacts: a large Madonna statue, a figure of Christ the King, and a poignant Stations of the Cross. These pieces offered solace and inspiration to the faithful. However, World War II brought devastation. Bombs rained down on Augsburg, leaving much of the city in ruins, including Unsere Liebe Frau. Yet, the spirit of the community remained unbroken. In the postwar years, amidst the rubble and uncertainty, a new Unsere Liebe Frau began to take shape. Designed by Augsburg architect Michael Kurz, the current church was completed in 1950. It’s a symbol of the city’s rebirth, a physical embodiment of the community’s determination to rebuild and renew. Some of the cherished items from the original church survived the bombing, finding a new home within the rebuilt Unsere Liebe Frau. The Madonna, Christ the King, and the Stations of the Cross, silent witnesses to both destruction and resurrection, continue to offer comfort and spiritual guidance. In 1953, the Bochumer Verein fϋr Gussstahlfabrikation cast a four-part bell harmony for Unsere Liebe Frau: C sharp, E, F sharp, and G sharp. These bells, with their rich tones, call the faithful to worship and resonate throughout the Lechhausen district. They serve as a reminder of the enduring power of faith. So, as you stand before Unsere Liebe Frau, take a moment to appreciate not just the building itself, but the story it tells. It’s a story of loss and recovery, of faith and resilience, a story deeply intertwined with the history of Augsburg and its people.
