Pocket parks can be little gems. Let’s explore University Village Park. Established in 2021, University Village Park occupies a modest .11 acres or 5000 square feet. But size isn’t everything. This small park offers a valuable green space for the community.
University Village Civic Club played a key role. They pushed for revitalizing University Village Park. The club brought community needs to the Houston Parks Board’s attention. They also gathered community input. This ensured the park reflected the neighborhood’s desires.
Currently, University Village Park provides a few essential amenities. These include two picnic tables, park signage, trees, landscaping, a community garden and a trash receptacle. It is a simple space. It is designed for relaxation and community interaction.
But there’s more to the story of University Village Park. Plans are underway for a renovation project. This shows a commitment to improving the park. The goal is to better serve the community. A virtual community meeting was held in May 2022. Here, residents shared their thoughts on two design options for University Village Park.
Based on community input and recreational needs, a final design was chosen. What can you expect from the improvements? A new play area will be built. This includes a flower shade structure and a swing. Interactive play panels, a hopscotch court, and a four-square court will be added. A concrete seat wall and an extra picnic table will be installed at University Village Park.
An open lawn play area will be created. New sidewalks with accessible ramps at Lucinda and Anita Streets will ensure ADA access. A decorative metal fence will be erected along the street perimeter. A wood fence will be installed along the adjacent properties of University Village Park. New native trees will line Lucinda and Anita Streets. Landscaping will enhance the park’s beauty. New drainage and underground detention will mitigate flooding.
The project’s cost is $500,000. This includes design and construction. Construction is expected to finish in late summer or early fall 2023. Houston Parks Board manages the project. They coordinate with the Houston Parks and Recreation Department. Clark Condon Associates served as the landscape architect. CSF Consulting LP was the structural and civil engineer. Landscape Art Inc. is the general contractor for University Village Park.
All community outreach has been completed during the design process. The first design option focused on a mini half-court basketball court. The second design option emphasized play areas and a trail.
