Remember Gino Fracas. He built the Windsor Lancers football team. This is the University of Windsor Stadium. It stands in the shadow of the Ambassador Bridge. The bridge links Detroit and Windsor.
Once, this was Assumption University. It was a private Roman Catholic university. In 1967, it became the University of Windsor. Public funding became available. With the new name came a focus on athletics. The Windsor Lancers were born.
Before they were the Lancers, they were the Purple Raiders. The football program took a big step in 1968. Canadian University star and CFL alum Gino Fracas created the team. He served for over twenty years. In 1968, they won the CCIFC Championship. The Lancers joined the OUA. They won their only Yates Cup in 1975. Three Lancers won the Hec Crichton Trophy. It is awarded to Canada’s top player. Andrew Parici, Scott Mallender and Daryl Stephenson won the award. They brought the award to the Blue and Gold.
The University of Windsor Stadium is their current home. It was built in 2005. It is perfect for Lancer football. The grandstand seats 2,000 fans. Berms offer additional space. The stadium also hosts soccer and track and field.

The university fields 17 varsity teams. They compete for championships. Club and intramural opportunities are available. The Toldo Lancer Centre has a 25-metre pool. A triple gymnasium and indoor track are available. There is a two-storey fitness centre and four multi-purpose studios. Outdoor facilities include Alumni Stadium. It has a FIFA-approved artificial turf surface. It can seat up to 10,000 spectators. A cricket pitch is also available.
