Ever wondered how a town renowned for thread weaving transformed into a hub of higher education? Today we are standing in front of the University of the West of Scotland Paisley Campus. It is a place where history meets innovation. This university has a rich past and a vibrant present.

Let’s step back in time. Paisley was once famous for its thread mills. Two brothers Peter and Thomas Coats ran the Coats mill. They were progressive thinkers inspired by the Scottish Enlightenment. They were also generous philanthropists. They supported education and culture in Paisley. The Coats brothers helped found the Philosophical Institution in 1808. They donated a museum and library to the town. They also funded the Coats Observatory.

The Philosophical Institution played a key role in establishing the School of Arts in 1836. This school later became a Government School of Design in 1846. It aimed to improve product design through specialized training. Peter Coats directed both the Philosophical Institution and the School of Design. In 1897 Princess Louise Duchess of Argyll laid the foundation stone for a new college building. The design was chosen through an architectural competition. Local industrialists including Peter Brough and Thomas Coats helped fund the project.

By the early 20th century Paisley Technical College and School of Art offered the University of London External Programme. Lewis Fry Richardson a remarkable figure served as principal from 1922 to 1940. He was a mathematician physicist and meteorologist. He also studied psychology and was a pacifist. Richardson pioneered weather forecasting techniques. He applied similar methods to the study of war and conducted groundbreaking work on fractals.

The institution faced financial challenges during the first half of the century. After World War II it gained Central Institution status. This provided regular government funding. The School of Art however had to close and its students were transferred to the Glasgow School of Art. The institution became Paisley College of Technology in 1950. In the 1960s the college expanded significantly. New buildings were added to the original Neo-Classical structure on the 20-acre town center site.

Paisley like other Central Institutions offered degrees under the Council for National Academic Awards. The Further and Higher Education Act of 1992 granted Paisley College of Technology university status. It became the University of Paisley with a royal charter and degree-awarding powers.

In 1993 the University of Paisley merged with Craigie College of Education in Ayr. Nursing colleges in the town were also incorporated. The Ayr Campus was set on 20 acres of parkland near the River Ayr. It also housed the West of Scotland Management Centre.

On August 1 2007 the University of Paisley merged with Bell College in Hamilton. The merged institution was named University of the West of Scotland on November 30 2007. This name change was controversial. Many felt it severed ties with Paisley’s heritage. The Keep It Paisley campaign gained local support including that of MP Douglas Alexander.

Today the University of the West of Scotland Paisley Campus is at the heart of Paisley. It has around 10000 students and occupies over 20 acres. It offers various courses and research opportunities.
