Established in the heart of San Antonio, the University of the Incarnate Word’s story began not within its classrooms, but amidst a city gripped by a cholera outbreak. In 1869, three Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word arrived, answering a desperate plea for help. Their journey by stagecoach ended in a disheartening discovery: their intended home lay in ashes. The Ursuline Sisters offered refuge as the Sisters of Charity rebuilt, their resilience mirroring the spirit that would define the University of the Incarnate Word.
The University of the Incarnate Word’s roots lie in compassion. The Santa Rosa Infirmary, San Antonio’s first hospital, opened its doors in 1869, thanks to the Sisters. This act of service marked the beginning. Soon, their work expanded to childcare. By 1874, they established St. Joseph’s Orphanage for Girls and St. John’s Orphanage for Boys, laying the foundation for their future in education. The Incarnate Word School, established in 1881, officially began their formal educational journey. This institution, initially a college for women, transformed into the College and Academy of the Incarnate Word in 1909, marking its expansion into higher education.
The University of the Incarnate Word, as it became known in 1996, is a testament to its founders’ vision. Their commitment to education grew. In 1998, the University of the Incarnate Word earned the right to offer doctoral degrees, a significant milestone in its evolution. It expanded its reach globally, with a campus in China in 2000, offering accredited degrees in partnership with South China Normal University in Guangzhou. The university’s commitment to community service remains a cornerstone. Every student is required to dedicate 45 volunteer hours before graduation, ensuring the spirit of the founding Sisters lives on.
