The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio – Greehey Campus is one of the largest health sciences universities in South Texas. It is located in the South Texas Medical Center and serves San Antonio and all of the 50,000 square miles (130,000 km2) area of Central and South Texas. The Greehey Campus is home to several research facilities. It is a hub for cancer research, including the Greehey Children’s Cancer Research Institute which has a long and storied history of research and development. The South Texas Research Facility (STRF) opened in 2011. The STRF connects the Greehey Campus, by way of a curving building that follows the northern edge of the campus, to the existing buildings on the university’s campus. This connection is vital to the work that the campus is doing. The campus is one of four medical schools in the University of Texas System. The university has eight campuses, spanning 250 acres (1.0 km2) in total. The main campus is the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Campus. But it is the Greehey Campus that is so vital to the research being done here in San Antonio.
