Founded in 1976 the University of Santa Monica has a rich history. It began as Koh-e-nor University. Its founder John-Roger envisioned a top-tier graduate school. Students from around the world would learn to live in the present. They would engage in a unique process of spiritual self-discovery. The University of Santa Monica’s early years involved clarifying its purpose. The Board of Trustees also focused on fundraising. In 1980 John-Roger met the Hulnicks. They shared a vision for Soul-centered education. Together they worked to create the University of Santa Monica. The Hulnicks became President and Academic Vice President in 1980. They implemented the University’s first program. This was a two-year Master of Arts in Spiritual Psychology. The Hulnicks recognized a need for practical knowledge. This was crucial for effective relationships. They wanted to create an internationally recognized graduate school. It would serve diverse students with varied professional objectives. The University of Santa Monica focused on relevant practical information. This approach fostered a supportive learning environment. High achievement standards were emphasized. In September 1981 the first Master’s students enrolled. The University of Santa Monica received authorization to operate in 1982. It received state approval in 1983 achieving the highest level possible. The Hulnicks’ commitment to Soul-Centered education created a dynamic institution. It emphasized relevant skills and experiences supporting student self-discovery. Over time the University of Santa Monica’s programs became leading-edge. They integrated psychology and spirituality. The University of Santa Monica refined its mission in 1992. It became the Center for the Study and Practice of Spiritual Psychology. New programs were added. These included a Master’s program in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis on Spiritual Psychology. USM also launched a Master’s Program in Spiritual Psychology emphasizing Consciousness Health and Healing. Doctoral programs were introduced in 2005 and 2006. The University of Santa Monica expanded its reach in 2008. It planned to launch an online classroom. This would allow a wider audience to participate. The University of Santa Monica launched an online program in 2014. This included courses and a membership website. The University of Santa Monica streamlined its academic offerings in 2015. It phased out its Master’s degree programs. However it launched a new 10-month certificate program. The University of Santa Monica continues to offer a dynamic learning environment.
