Did you know that the University of Salford Peel Park Campus has roots stretching back to the 19th century? It began as the Salford Working Men’s College in 1858 and the Pendleton Mechanics’ Institute in 1850. These institutions merged to form the Royal Technical Institute in 1896.

Welcome to the University of Salford Peel Park Campus. This campus is not just a place of learning. It is a landmark with a rich history and a vibrant present.

Let’s delve into the story of this remarkable institution. The Royal Technical Institute received royal recognition early on. The Duke and Duchess of York attended its opening ceremony. They later became King George V and Queen Mary. This royal connection allowed the institute to add Royal to its name.

Initially, the focus was on subjects vital to Salford’s industrial scene. Mechanical engineering, textiles, and construction were key areas of study. The institute had nine departments and 1,240 students. There were only 19 staff members.

Over time, the institution evolved. In 1921, it was renamed the Royal Technical College, Salford. A significant change occurred in 1958. The college split into two separate entities. There was the remaining Royal Technical College. There was also a breakaway institution called Peel Park Technical College.

Peel Park Technical College underwent several name changes. It became Salford Technical College in 1961. Later, it was known as Salford College of Technology in 1970. Finally, it became University College Salford in 1992.

Meanwhile, the Royal Technical College became a College of Advanced Technology in 1956. The Robbins Report in 1963 paved the way for university status.

In 1967, the Royal College of Advanced Technology achieved university status. Queen Elizabeth II presented the Royal Charter. The institution officially became the University of Salford.

Interestingly, University College Salford merged with the University of Salford in 1996. This merger created a single, unified institution.

The University of Salford Peel Park Campus is ideally located. It is less than 1.5 miles from Manchester city centre. The campus sits on the banks of the River Irwell. It is next to Peel Park. Peel Park is considered possibly the first public park in the world. It opened in 1846.

The Peel Building stands as a testament to the university’s history. Designed by Henry Lord, it was built in 1896. The Peel Building was originally the Salford Royal Technical Institute. Today, it houses the School of Environment and Life Sciences.

The building’s facade features red Accrington bricks and sculpted terracotta. Earp, Son & Hobbs created the beautiful detailing.

Outside the Peel Building, you might notice what looks like an elaborate brick gazebo. This structure is also designed by Henry Lord. It cleverly disguises a ventilation duct for the laboratories below.

Today, the University of Salford welcomes students from over 130 countries. The University of Salford Peel Park Campus continues to evolve. It remains a vital center for education and research.
