Ever wonder where Ghana’s future business leaders hone their skills? That’s the University of Professional Studies, Accra. It is known as UPSA. This public university stands as a beacon of professional education.

UPSA’s story began in 1965. It started as a private business education provider. In 1978, the government took over. It became the Institute of Professional Studies. Act 566 in 1999 established it as a tertiary institution. Its focus was accounting and management. In September 2008, UPSA gained full university status. The University of Professional Studies Act in 2012 officially renamed it UPSA.

UPSA is unique in Ghana. It provides both academic and professional education. This focus makes its graduates highly sought after. The motto “Scholarship with Professionalism” guides the university. It emphasizes practical skills alongside academic knowledge.

UPSA’s dual qualification scheme enhances students’ prospects. Students pursue a degree and a professional certification. ACCA, ICAG, and CIM are among the options. This gives them a competitive edge in the job market.

Professor Abednego Feehi Okoe Amartey is the current Vice-Chancellor. He assumed the position in 2016. Before him, Professor Joshua Alabi was the first Vice-Chancellor. He served from 2012 to 2016.

UPSA offers a wide array of programs. Undergraduate degrees include Public Relations Management and Accounting. There are also postgraduate programs. These include Master of Philosophy in Finance and MBA in Marketing.

The university’s commitment extends beyond academics. In September 2020, President Nana Akufo-Addo commissioned a new stadium. This 500-seat AstroTurf stadium enhances sports facilities.

UPSA also honored Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh. They named a hostel after him. This recognized his contributions to education as Minister for Education.

The university’s coat of arms tells a story. The “Ako Ben” symbol signifies readiness. The shield protects the university’s intellectual wealth. The banner displays the motto: “Scholarship with Professionalism.”

Many notable figures have passed through UPSA’s halls. Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II and Albert Kan-Dapaah are alumni. Stonebwoy and Camidoh are also among its famous graduates.

From humble beginnings, UPSA has grown significantly. It now boasts over 23,000 students. Its commitment to excellence remains unwavering. The University of Professional Studies, Accra continues to shape Ghana’s future leaders.
