Founded in 1938, the University of Piraeus started as the School for Industrial Studies. Its initial goal was to train managerial executives. The Industrialists and Tradesmen Association established it. In 1945, it was renamed the Higher School for Industrial Studies. Then in 1958, it became the Graduate School for Industrial Studies. The University of Piraeus finally got its current name in 1989.

The University of Piraeus has evolved. It expanded from business management to other fields. These include economics finance maritime studies informatics and statistics. It became a public university in 1966.

Did you know the University of Piraeus is the second-oldest business school in Greece? Also the Department of Banking and Financial Management is the oldest finance department in the country.

The University of Piraeus has ten academic departments. They focus on various fields. These are business management computer science economics finance and maritime studies. Each department offers four-year Bachelor of Science degrees.

The School of Economics Business and International Studies was established in 2013. The School of Finance and Statistics also started in 2013. So did the School of Maritime and Industrial Studies. Finally the School of Information and Communication Technologies was founded in 2013 as well.

The University of Piraeus offers many postgraduate programs. These programs lead to M.B.A. or M.Sc. degrees. Examples include Actuarial Science and Risk Management and Accounting. The Department of International and European Studies has two programs in English. One is American Studies Politics Strategy and Economics. The other is Energy Strategy Law and Economics.

Research is a key part of the University of Piraeus. The University of Piraeus Research Center UPRC was founded in 1989. It fosters research activities.

The University of Piraeus has many international agreements. These include Erasmus+ and other collaborations. These agreements allow student and staff exchanges. They also promote joint research and conferences. The university is a member of international organizations. These include the European University Association and the International Association of Universities.

In July 2022 the University of Piraeus signed an agreement with the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels. In April 2023 it agreed to cooperate with the Piraeus Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
