Moreover, it features one of the few schools of naval architecture and marine engineering in the U.S.
The University of New Orleans campus spans 195 acres. It sits on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain. You’ll find athletic facilities on the East Campus. These include Maestri Field and the UNO Lakefront Arena. Adjacent to the main campus is The Beach. This is a research and technology park.
UNO’s athletic teams are called the Privateers. Fourteen Privateer teams compete in the NCAA Division I Southland Conference.
State Senator Theodore M Hickey played a crucial role in establishing the University of New Orleans. He authored the act in 1956 that created it. The UNO University Ballroom honors Hickey’s contribution. It was named after him in 2014.
The University of New Orleans was the first racially integrated public university in the South. This was a significant step forward.
Hurricane Katrina in 2005 caused damage to the campus. However, the University of New Orleans was resilient. It reopened virtually in October 2005. The main campus reopened in December 2005.

The oldest lecture buildings are designed like a ship. The Liberal Arts Building and the Science Building have exterior balconies. Both buildings feature two central courtyards.
The Earl K Long Library is a central hub. It houses the Privateer Enrollment Center. The University Center hosts dining services, meeting spaces, and student support offices.
The University of New Orleans offers on-campus housing. Pontchartrain Halls, Privateer Place, and Lafitte Village are options for students.

Many notable alumni have walked these halls. They include jazz singer Robin Barnes and comedian Ellen DeGeneres. Poet Jericho Brown and founder of Khan Academy Sal Khan also attended UNO.
