Established in the 1960s the University of KwaZulu-Natal Westville campus has a rich history. It began as the University College for Indians. This was on Salisbury Island in Durban Bay. Student numbers were initially low due to the Congress Alliance’s policy. This policy shunned apartheid structures. The 1980s saw a shift. A strategy of education under protest emerged. This aimed to transform apartheid institutions into sites of struggle. Student numbers boomed. In 1971 the college gained university status.
