Has anyone ever noticed how a place can hum with untold stories? The University of Johannesburg APB Campus, right here in Cottesloe, practically vibrates with them. Often mistaken for being in Auckland Park, this campus is actually a self-contained piece of suburbia, nestled within Cottesloe. The main road, Bunting Road, isn’t named after festive decorations, but after a subspecies of bird. The University of Johannesburg APB Campus is one of four urban campuses of the University of Johannesburg. Originally, it was part of the Technikon Witwatersrand. Now, it houses the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA) and the Faculty of Management. Imagine walking through the FADA building, a hub of creative energy. Around 1,200 students fill its workshops, studios, and computer labs. They bring life to the common lecture venues, auditorium, gallery, and library. Eight departments make up FADA: Architecture, Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Jewellery Design and Manufacture, Multimedia, and Visual Art. The Faculty of Management isn’t confined to just this campus. It stretches across to the Auckland Park Kingsway Campus and the Soweto Campus. The University of Johannesburg APB Campus may look like a typical South African suburb, but within its boundaries lies a unique blend of academic and artistic pursuits. This campus holds a wealth of facilities, from lecture halls and a Netcare Clinic, to restaurants like the Design Café, the Waterford Restaurant, and the Bistro. The Con Cowan Theatre, nestled within the Con Cowan Building, offers a 180-seat venue. The Great Hall, with its capacity of 550, hosts concerts, ceremonies, exhibitions, and even exams. The Kerzner Building, a R20 million investment, serves as a training ground for hospitality and tourism students. The University of Johannesburg APB Campus isn’t just a place of learning, it’s a community. It has its own radio station, UJFM, and a student shuttle service connecting it with other campuses. The campus even boasts five student residences, catering to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. It offers a blend of history, creativity, and practicality, a microcosm of the city itself.
