What if a university could change the world? Here at the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE), that’s not just a question, it’s a mission. Born from a visionary idea in 2013 during an Oral Health Stakeholders meeting right here in Kigali, UGHE is no ordinary institution. The Cummings Foundation envisioned a university to serve not only Rwanda, but all of Africa and beyond. This vision resonated deeply with Dr. Paul Farmer, who saw it aligning perfectly with Rwanda’s goal of developing a “knowledge” economy alongside providing vital care. The University of Global Health Equity was officially launched in 2015. It’s a testament to the powerful partnership between the Cummings Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Rwandan government. Partners In Health, with its decades of experience delivering healthcare in underserved communities, plays a vital role in UGHE’s foundation. UGHE recognizes that simply training more medical professionals isn’t enough. The world needs leaders who can tackle complex health challenges head-on. That’s why UGHE’s approach is unique. It focuses on equipping students with practical, real-world experience from day one. This hands-on approach, championed by the late Dr. Paul Farmer, ensures graduates are prepared to address the most pressing global health crises. The University of Global Health Equity is not just about textbooks and classrooms. It’s about empowering a new generation of global health leaders. They will design and manage effective health systems, bridging the gap between essential care and those who need it most.
