What if cocoa beans could build a university? At the University of Ghana, they practically did. This university, right here in Legon, Accra, stands as a testament to the power of collective will. The University of Ghana’s story begins in 1948. It was founded as the University College of the Gold Coast. This was a direct result of the Asquith Commission’s recommendations. Initially, the British government favored a single university for all of British West Africa, located in Nigeria. However, Ghanaians, led by Dr. J.B. Danquah, fiercely advocated for their own institution. Their persistence paid off. The British government conceded, with the stipulation that Ghanaians would bear the financial burden. And they did. The cocoa farmers, the backbone of Ghana’s economy, rallied together, raising the necessary funds. This grassroots effort transformed the dream of higher education into a reality. The University of Ghana, therefore, is not just a place of learning. It’s a symbol of Ghanaian determination and self-reliance. David Mowbray Balme, the first principal, shaped the university’s early years. His leadership established a strong foundation for academic excellence. The university initially partnered with the University of London. This ensured high standards and facilitated access to resources. Later, in 1961, the University College of the Gold Coast achieved full university status, becoming the University of Ghana. This marked a significant step towards academic independence. The university has since grown into a leading institution. It offers a diverse range of programs, from the arts and sciences to business and law. The Balme Library, named after the university’s first principal, houses a vast collection of resources. As you stand here, at the University of Ghana, remember the cocoa farmers whose vision and determination built this institution. Their legacy lives on in every lecture hall, every laboratory, and every graduate who walks through these doors.
