The University of Cebu started small. A group of young men led by lawyer Augusto W Go had a dream. They wanted to provide quality education. This led to the Cebu College of Commerce. It later became Cebu Central Colleges. From humble beginnings, it blossomed.
Originally, only a handful of students enrolled at the Cebu College of Commerce. However, the college was established in 1964. Over time, it experienced significant growth. Eventually, it transformed into the University of Cebu.
The University of Cebu is known for its commitment to excellence. The Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation recognizes it. In 2016, the Commission on Higher Education declared it a Center of Excellence. It excels in different fields.
The University of Cebu Main Campus is just one of several locations. The university has five campuses across Metro Cebu. There’s the Banilad Campus and the Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue Campus. The Maritime Education and Training Center Campus and the Pardo Talisay Campus are also important. A former campus was replaced by an expansion of Elizabeth Mall.
Athletics are an integral part of the University of Cebu. The university is a member of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. Their basketball team is the Webmasters. In 2010, they broke a long-standing record. They became the first team other than the University of Visayas to win the basketball championship. The Webmasters defended their title the following year.
Several notable athletes have emerged from the University of Cebu. June Mar Fajardo and Brian Heruela achieved success in professional careers. Dondon Hontiveros was a star player for UC. He played in the Cebu Amateur Athletic Association.
The University of Cebu has achieved success in various sports. In 2010, the men’s football team won the tournament. They won again in 2015. In 2014, UC won six gold medals in taekwondo. The university won the dancesport competition in 2017. Weightlifter Elreen Ando won gold in 2019. She represented the Philippines at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In 2022, they won the most medals in swimming. In 2023, they won the men’s beach volleyball tournament.
