Let’s step back to 1694, when Constantin Brâncoveanu, the ruler of Wallachia, established the Princely Academy in Bucharest. Originally, lectures were delivered in Greek, reflecting the cultural influences of the time. This academy, the precursor to the University of Bucharest, marked the beginning of higher education in Romania. Fast forward to July 4, 1864. Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza formally established the University of Bucharest. He united the Faculties of Law, Sciences, and Letters into a single institution, solidifying its role as a center of learning. The University of Bucharest quickly expanded, adding faculties of Medicine, Theology, Geology, and more. It became a beacon of knowledge, attracting some of Romania’s brightest minds. But the university’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. In 1956, student leaders from the University of Bucharest planned a peaceful protest against the communist regime. Unfortunately, the authorities suppressed the movement. The university’s central building suffered significant damage during the bombardments of Bucharest in 1944. It wasn’t fully reconstructed until the early 1970s. However, these setbacks only strengthened the university’s resolve. The University of Bucharest played a pivotal role in the Romanian Revolution of 1989. The University Square, adjacent to the university, became a focal point for protests and clashes with security forces. The university continued to be a center of anti-communist demonstrations in the months that followed. From its humble beginnings as a princely academy to its current status as a leading research institution, the University of Bucharest has navigated a complex history. It stands as a symbol of perseverance, intellectual curiosity, and the pursuit of a better future. Today, the University of Bucharest offers a wide range of programs across various disciplines.
