Founded in 1450 the University of Barcelona stands before you a testament to centuries of learning. Its story is one of resilience growth and remarkable influence. Initially established under King Alfonso V of Aragon the University faced challenges. The Consell de Cent Barcelona’s council initially resisted. They saw the university as an intrusion. King Alfonso’s prerogative however prevailed. The Estudi General became the city’s true university firmly under its control.

For nearly fifty years before its official founding Barcelona had a fledgling medical school. This Estudi General predated the official university. Neither the Consell de Cent nor other leading institutions fully recognized it. It was considered an intrusion on their jurisdictions. Yet this earlier school laid the groundwork for the great institution we see today. The University of Barcelona.

The university’s early years saw periods of both growth and strife. Financial difficulties and internal conflict were common. Despite this illustrious professors made their mark establishing influential schools of thought. The 1596 Ordinances highlighted the constant need for reform. This followed similar ordinances in 1539 and 1559 introducing competitive examinations for professorships.

The War of the Spanish Succession brought a significant disruption. The Bourbon dynasty closed the University of Barcelona in 1714. This closure lasted until 1837. The university then reopened during a liberal revolution under Isabella II. Its location shifted from Cervera back to Barcelona.

The University’s return to Barcelona was initially in the Convent of Carme. Space was tight. The Faculty of Medicine found temporary residence in the Royal Academy of Medicine. This was next to the Hospital of Santa Creu. All faculties were initially housed in just two streets carrer Hospital and carrer del Carme.

The need for larger facilities led to the construction of a new building designed by Elies Rogent. This began in 1863 and wasn’t completed until 1882. The clock and iron bell in the Pati de Lletres the Patio of the Arts were added in 1881. This construction had a huge impact on Barcelona. It was one of the first buildings outside the ancient city walls.

The University of Barcelona continued to grow. The Pedralbes campus began in 1952. The first building here was the Faculty of Pharmacy in 1956. The growth continued. The Campus Mundet was added later. In 2006 the Faculties of History and Geography and Philosophy moved to the city center.

The University of Barcelona was the only university in Catalonia until 1971. The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya then became independent. This university handles more technical subjects. Several new universities followed including the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in 1968.

Today the University of Barcelona remains a leading institution. It houses a vast library the second largest university library in Spain. It boasts a vast range of departments faculties and research centers. It consistently ranks among the top universities in Spain and globally. The University of Barcelona’s legacy continues to shape Catalonia and the world.
