Established in 1970, the University of Augsburg is a relatively young institution. Yet, its story echoes centuries of academic pursuit in the region. The University of Augsburg isn’t Augsburg’s first foray into higher education. Long before its modern campus, a university thrived in Dillingen an der Donau, founded in 1551 by Cardinal Otto Truchsess von Waldburg. This institution, overseen by the Jesuits, played a crucial role in the Counter-Reformation before its closure in 1803. While Augsburg itself lacked a university for a considerable period, the desire for one persisted. Numerous attempts were made, particularly after World War II, but they all met with failure. The dream finally materialized during the educational expansion of the 1960s and 70s. The University of Augsburg was born, built upon the vision of a modern, reform-oriented institution inspired by Anglo-American models. Interestingly, the initial concept was for a university focused on business and social sciences, a “Harvard am Lech.” However, with the integration of teacher training and the re-establishment of a Catholic theological faculty, the University of Augsburg evolved into a multi-faceted institution. This expansion was further fueled by the overcrowded conditions at the University of Munich, leading some faculties to find a new home in Augsburg. Today, the University of Augsburg boasts eight faculties, a testament to its growth and adaptability. Its modern campus, complete with a “Uni-See,” stands in stark contrast to the historical institutions that preceded it. The university’s commitment to international collaboration is evident in its partnerships with over 40 universities worldwide. This global outlook is a key aspect of its identity. In 2009, the University of Augsburg witnessed a significant student sit-in. Over 500 students occupied lecture hall number 1 to protest tuition fees and declining educational standards. Their demonstration lasted for weeks, filled with discussions, performances, and film screenings. This event underscores the university’s role not just as a place of learning but also as a platform for student activism. As you stand before the University of Augsburg, consider its journey from a Counter-Reformation university in Dillingen to a modern campus with a global reach. It’s a story of persistence, adaptation, and a commitment to knowledge, echoing its motto, “Scientia et conscientia.”
