Did you know that University Heights United Methodist Church UHUMC started in a third-grade classroom? It’s true. This wasn’t some grand cathedral from the start. UHUMC’s story begins after World War II a time of massive church growth. Dr Candler Budd envisioned a new Methodist church to serve Decatur’s expanding neighborhoods.
In 1956 two Emory Candler School of Theology students were tasked with establishing a church. Medlock Elementary School became their first sanctuary. The following year Rev Victor Schroedar became the first full-time pastor. UHUMC officially formed within those elementary school walls.
Next Rev Bill Landis took the reins. Under his leadership the church purchased land. They built their educational wing. They initially wanted property on Druid Hills Road for better visibility. However the North Druid Woods location proved more affordable. The 1960s saw the church flourish under Rev Charles Hoover. He oversaw the construction of the sanctuary we see today a true blessing nestled in North Druid Woods.
Rev James Sanders arrived in 1969. He oversaw major renovations including the addition of air conditioning to the educational building. Many pastors followed each leaving their mark on UHUMC. Today the church boasts a thriving preschool Preschool at The Heights PATH. PATH continues to enrich the lives of local children and families.
UHUMC’s mission is Listen Love Lead. It remains a vital part of the North Druid Woods community a true neighborhood church. Its doors are open to all. The church’s history reflects growth adaptation and a steadfast commitment to faith community and service. This is not just a building it is a testament to perseverance and faith. It is a place of welcome a place of belonging a place where everyone is known.
