Ninety-four feet tall that’s the University Heights Condominium. A mid-century modern marvel. Right here next to the University of Utah.
University Heights Condominium isn’t just a building. It’s a piece of Salt Lake City history. Built in 1951 it embodies mid-century modern design. Architects Scott and Beecher designed it. They were influenced by the International Style. Alvar Aalto’s work may have also inspired them.
The eight-story structure is brick and reinforced concrete. Its asymmetrical design is striking. Notice the windows cut at the corners. There’s a lack of ornamentation. Yet the white portico with its abstract sculptural colonnade is quite beautiful. It originally served as apartments. However in 1979 it was converted into condominiums.
What’s truly remarkable is its parking. Two levels are located under a living roof. This was innovative for the 1950s. University Heights offers a high density of modestly sized units. It serves a diverse community including University of Utah students and faculty.
Imagine living here. Walking to class or work. Enjoying the convenience of in-unit laundry and garage parking. Extra storage is also available. Cats are welcome too. The University Heights Condominium isn’t just about luxury. It’s about location and community. It’s a place where history and modern living intertwine.
So take a moment to appreciate this unique building. A testament to thoughtful design. It’s more than just a condominium. It’s a piece of Salt Lake City’s architectural heritage.
