Did you ever hear of a university that moved its entire campus? University College Dublin did just that. University College Dublin, or UCD as it’s known locally, sits on a sprawling 330-acre campus in Belfield. It wasn’t always here though. Originally, UCD was located in Dublin’s city center at St. Stephen’s Green and Earlsfort Terrace. Imagine the logistical feat of transferring an entire university, from libraries and labs to student residences, several kilometers south! This transformation began in the 1960s and culminated in the modern campus university you see today. University College Dublin traces its roots back to the Catholic University of Ireland, founded in 1854. John Henry Newman, a prominent figure in religious and educational circles, served as its first rector. Over the years, UCD evolved, becoming University College in 1883 and finally University College Dublin in 1908 under the National University of Ireland. The university has played a significant role in Irish history, with staff and students involved in pivotal moments like the Irish War of Independence. Several Irish presidents and prime ministers have walked these halls, a testament to UCD’s influence on the nation’s political landscape. UCD boasts a diverse range of academic disciplines. It encompasses six colleges: Arts and Humanities, Business, Engineering and Architecture, Health and Agricultural Sciences, Social Sciences and Law, and Science. Each college further divides into numerous schools, offering specialized programs. This breadth of study makes UCD a hub of intellectual curiosity and exploration. Today, University College Dublin stands as Ireland’s largest university, with over 37,000 students from around the globe. It has a vibrant campus life, with over 60 sports clubs and 70 student societies. Its sporting prowess is evident in its representation in major Irish leagues for rugby and soccer. The campus is also home to Leinster Rugby’s headquarters and training facilities. From its humble beginnings in the city center to its sprawling campus in Belfield, University College Dublin has consistently grown and adapted.
