Established in 1960, University Christian Church has a fascinating story. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) wanted to establish a new church in Houston’s Third Ward. Dr. Paul Sims, James Behler, and Dr. E.W. Rand began exploring this possibility. Their vision for University Christian Church was to serve students and faculty from Texas Southern University and the surrounding community. That’s why they chose the name “University Christian Church”. For six months, they prayed, studied, and planned. They wanted University Christian Church to be a vibrant, relevant church. Initial meetings were held in homes. As the group grew, they moved to the South-Central YMCA. Thirty people signed the church charter. The first service at University Christian Church was held on Palm Sunday, April 10, 1960, in the YMCA Chapel. The official founding date is July 10, 1960. By 1963, University Christian Church needed a larger space. They relocated to 3610 Southmore Blvd, where they renovated and built a new sanctuary. The congregation moved into this sanctuary in February 1964. They continue to worship there today. The mortgage was paid off in 1979. Driven by a desire for spiritual and numerical growth, University Christian Church purchased the adjacent property. Their goal is to create a flexible, user-friendly facility for the church and the Third Ward community. They envision activities and events that benefit both.
