Wow. Look at the Mandeville Art Gallery. It’s stunning isn’t it? Once known as the University Art Gallery this building has a rich history. For five decades it has been a vibrant hub for innovative art right here on the UC San Diego campus.

The gallery wasn’t always this impressive. In fact there was a time when its future was uncertain. Funding was cut. Staff were let go. There was even talk of turning this very space into classrooms. But the community rallied. Students faculty and local art lovers fought to preserve this important cultural institution. Their efforts paid off.

The gallery was saved. It underwent extensive renovations. Award-winning architects Studio E Architects completely transformed the interior. They even added a striking new entrance a modern portal that serves as both a welcoming space and an outdoor lobby. A media mesh wrap now covers much of the exterior allowing digital art to be displayed even outside the gallery itself.

Today the Mandeville Art Gallery is more accessible than ever. Its new location on the pedestrian walkway makes it more visible to the campus community. The renovations included a new black-box video viewing room. This enhances the gallery’s ability to showcase a wider range of contemporary art.

Ceci Moss the seasoned gallery Director and Chief Curator leads the gallery. She has big plans for its future. She hopes to make it a leading museum of contemporary art. She wants to ensure that students have life changing experiences here. She envisions the gallery as a space for collaboration for growth and for the kindling of passion for art.

The gallery’s inaugural exhibition after its renovation was aptly titled Are We Not Drawn Onward to New Era. It featured the work of faculty who hadn’t previously exhibited on campus. The exhibition explored themes of hope kinship community and our collective future. The exhibition truly highlighted the spirit of renewal and the promise of the gallery’s new chapter. So take a moment to soak in the beauty and history of the Mandeville Art Gallery. It’s a testament to the power of art and the unwavering dedication of a community that refused to let it fade away.
