“What secrets do the depths hold?” a grizzled fisherman once mused to young Maurice Aubert. This question sparked a lifelong fascination with the sea. It led to the creation of something truly remarkable right here before us, the Université Internationale de la Mer. Aubert wasn’t content with just admiring the ocean’s beauty. He wanted to understand its complexities, its connection to human health, a field he termed “medical oceanography.” In 1960, Aubert, a physician specializing in head and neck surgery, founded the Centre d’études et de Recherches de Biologie Marine et d’Océanographie Médicale (CERBOM) in Nice. This was a crucial step towards realizing his vision. The Université Internationale de la Mer, which he founded in 1995 in Cagnes-sur-Mer, stands as a testament to his dedication. Aubert didn’t just found institutions. He nurtured them. He served as Director of Research at INSERM and directed the Revue Internationale d’Océanographie Médicale until 1994. Even after CERBOM closed its doors, Aubert, along with his wife Jacqueline, also a physician, continued their research. They poured their knowledge and passion into the Université Internationale de la Mer. Aubert even held a professorship there, sharing his vast experience. His legacy extends beyond the walls of this university. He authored over 250 academic publications, contributing significantly to our understanding of the sea. His influence continues to ripple through the scientific community, inspiring generations of researchers to explore the mysteries of the ocean. The Université Internationale de la Mer is more than just a building. It is a living embodiment of Maurice Aubert’s dream, a place where the passion for the sea meets the pursuit of knowledge.
