Might the Universit\u00e4ts- und Landessportzentrum Salzburg Rif be the heart of Salzburg sports? This is ULSZ Rif. It is more than just a sports facility. ULSZ Rif is a hub of activity and a testament to Salzburg’s commitment to sports and education.

Let’s step back in time. The mid-1980s saw the beginning of planning for a state sports center. Simultaneously the University of Salzburg sought sports facilities for its growing sports faculty. The university lacked its own sports grounds. It relied on school gyms and public swimming pools. The idea of a joint sports center was born. It was a novelty for Austria.

The goal was clear. It should meet the needs of both the university and the state. It should ensure high utilization of the new sports facilities. After two years of construction, the ULSZ Rif opened in 1986. Wolfgang Becker took over the management. He was the former fitness trainer of the Salzburg Ice Hockey Club. It is now EC Red Bull Salzburg.

Imagine a single location. It hosts a wide range of outdoor and indoor sports facilities. The diversity of the sports offered is a key part. It reflects the philosophy behind the ULSZ Rif. The outdoor area is freely accessible. This reduces administrative effort. It also ensures high acceptance from the growing local population.

Over the years, the ULSZ Rif has adapted to meet actual needs. It has expanded significantly. In 2019, construction was happening in several places. The largest project was a new grandstand. It could hold 1500 people near the athletics facility. A striking finish tower was built. It includes six locker rooms with showers for 300 athletes. The upper floor provides offices for the Salzburg Football Association. The association relocated from the city of Salzburg to Hallein.

Since May 2019, a new student residence has been under construction. It uses a timber construction method. It sits between the sports halls and parking lots. It includes 66 rooms. It offers about 2,000 square meters of living space.

In March 2020, the ULSZ Rif celebrated its 12 millionth visitor. That’s a testament to its popularity. In summer 2021, long-time director Wolfgang Becker retired. Sabrina Rohrmoser succeeded him. She held degrees from Management Center Innsbruck, the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences, and the University of Salzburg.

The ULSZ Rif celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2021. The Avenue of Winners was officially opened. It features the hand and footprints of 22 athletes. They trained at the ULSZ Rif.

Spread over 45 hectares the ULSZ Rif hosts numerous facilities. There are seminar rooms and sports halls. Football pitches and athletic facilities are available. You will also find tennis courts and a boathouse for rowing. There is beach volleyball, a climbing tower, and a sauna. Other facilities include a shooting range and an inline hockey area.

The Universit\u00e4ts- und Landessportzentrum Salzburg Rif isn’t just a place for athletes. It is a place where sports dreams begin. It is a place where the community comes together. It is a place that truly earns its title. It is the heart of Salzburg sports.
