Founded in 1852, the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest began as the Institute of Agriculture in Pantelimon. Barbu Dimitrie Știrbei, the Ruler of Wallachia, signed the document that started it all. In 1861, the School of Veterinary Medicine joined the institute.

Over time, the university evolved. Curricula expanded to include forestry sciences in 1867. It then became the Central School of Agriculture and Forestry. King Carol I laid the foundation stone for a new campus in 1868. This was on the Herăstrău Estate. By 1869, teachers and students were active on the new campus.

The first agricultural research institution in Romania opened here in 1887. It was called the Bucharest Agronomic Station. Experimental land plots were established on the Herăstrău lake shore.

The 20th century brought more changes. In 1915, it was renamed the Higher School of Agriculture. The School of Veterinary Medicine became a faculty of the University of Bucharest in 1921. Agronomic education continued to develop. It was known as the Higher School of Agriculture of Herăstrău in 1915. Later, it was the Academy of Higher Agronomic Studies in 1929.

In 1938, it merged with the Politehnica School of Bucharest as the Faculty of Agronomy. By 1948, it was the Agronomic Institute of Bucharest. In the same year, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine rejoined, becoming part of the university again.

The name changed again in 1992. It became the University of Agronomic Sciences. Finally, in 1996, it adopted its current name. It is now the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest.

The University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest embraced the Bologna Process. It also uses the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System. The university offers programs in Romanian, English, and French. These programs cover bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.

The University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest has two campuses. The main campus is in Herăstrău. It spans 38 hectares north of the city center. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is at the Cotroceni campus. This is in central Bucharest along the Dâmbovița River. This campus covers 5.5 hectares.

The University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest includes seven faculties. These are Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, Horticulture, Animal Production Management and Engineering, Land Reclamation and Environmental Engineering, Biotechnologies, and Management, Economic Engineering in Agriculture, and Rural Development.

The University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest is part of several international associations including the Black Sea Universities Network and the European University Association. It has numerous ERASMUS agreements. This connects it to the world.
