Ever wondered about the history woven into the very stones of this university? Welcome to the Universitat de les Illes Balears in Ibiza. This isn’t just a place of learning. It’s a chapter in a much longer story. The Universitat de les Illes Balears boasts a rich history extending back to 1483. King Ferdinand II of Aragon then authorized the Estudi General Lul·lià in Palma. This college was named after the renowned philosopher Ramon Llull. It thrived for centuries until its closure in 1835. After that Balearic students went to universities in mainland Spain. For a long time higher education was absent from the islands. But the Estudi General Lul·lià was re-established in 1949 under the University of Barcelona. It offered courses in philosophy and philology. This marked the return of higher learning to the Balearics. Later it expanded its offering with new faculties of Science and Arts in 1972. Then came the Faculty of Law. In 1978 the faculties gained independence. This resulted in the establishment of the University of Palma. The name changed to the Universitat de les Illes Balears in 1985. The modern campus construction started in 1983. This was on the road to Valldemossa. The location was controversial. There was a preferred alternative site near Palma’s Faculty of Sciences. The campus finally opened in 1993. The Universitat de les Illes Balears then centralized all Palma-based studies. The university expanded. Campuses opened in Ibiza and Menorca in 1998. They offer courses in business administration law nursing education and tourism. The Universitat de les Illes Balears remains a hub of learning. It continues to educate future leaders and scholars in the Balearic Islands. Its history is an inspiring testament to the perseverance of knowledge. The spirit of Ramon Llull still echoes through its halls. It lives on in the minds of students and faculty alike. The Universitat de les Illes Balears is more than a university. It’s a legacy. It’s a beacon of knowledge in the heart of Ibiza.
