The largest non-state university in Europe. That’s what they call Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, with twelve faculties spread across five campuses in Italy. Right here, in Milan, the heart of the university is a historic Cistercian monastery. It has been here since the 15th century, nestled within Milan’s original city walls. But the original building was built in the 8th century, by Benedictine monks, before the Cistercians even arrived. The campus was carefully expanded by the monks, through military and social changes. The Napoleonic era and World War II were particularly formative. Today, the university is a symbol of both change and tradition. You can see it in the blend of modern technology and ancient cloisters. You can feel it in the energy of the students and the dedication of the professors. They are the inheritors of a long and rich history, a history that began with the Benedictine monks and still echoes in the halls of this beautiful university.
