Established in 2000 the Universidade de Dili UNDIL began operating in 2002. It’s a private philanthropic university in Timor-Leste. UNDIL stands proudly in Dili the capital city. It’s a testament to the nation’s commitment to higher education. The university’s location is Mascarenhas a suburban area of Dili. This easily accessible location benefits students from across the country.
UNDIL’s history is deeply entwined with Timor-Leste’s journey to independence. It started as the Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestao Dili. This built upon the foundation of the Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Ekonomi a higher economics school established in the 1990s during Indonesian occupation. The inspiration for this was the ISEG a Portuguese higher education institution affiliated with the University of Lisbon. This Portuguese connection is evident in many aspects of UNDIL’s curriculum and culture.
Today UNDIL boasts six faculties. These offer various undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The Faculty of Education focuses on teacher training. The Faculty of Health Sciences covers nursing dentistry and public health. Political science is taught in the Faculty of Political Science. Law students thrive in the Faculty of Law with both undergraduate and Master’s programs available. The Faculty of Economics provides programs in accounting and management. Aspiring engineers study petroleum and industrial engineering in the Faculty of Engineering. A total of eleven programs are offered ten undergraduate and one postgraduate program a Master’s in Law.
UNDIL fosters strong connections with universities in Portugal and Indonesia. These partnerships enrich the academic experience and create opportunities for international collaboration. UNDIL’s collaboration with universities such as the Universidade Nova de Lisboa and Gadjah Mada University underscores this commitment. Such partnerships contribute to the academic growth of the university. The exchange of ideas and resources enhances the overall learning environment.
The rector of UNDIL Jose Agostinho Belo leads the institution. He and his predecessors have played a vital role in shaping the university’s identity. UNDIL’s growth from a small economics school to a comprehensive university exemplifies Timor-Leste’s educational progress. The university continues to strive for excellence. It plays a vital role in developing human capital. UNDIL is a symbol of hope and progress in Timor-Leste a center of learning and innovation. It helps shape the future of the nation.
