Established on January 14 1961 the Universidad Nacional de la Amazonía Peruana UNAP stands as a beacon of higher learning in Iquitos. Imagine its humble beginnings. A small group of determined individuals envisioned a university. They wanted to serve the Loreto community. Their vision was for a higher education institution right here in Iquitos.

The UNAP wasn’t born fully formed. It began with a few schools. There was the School of Chemical-Industrial Engineering. The School of Agronomy was also there. A School of Mechanics and Electricity completed the initial lineup. It also included various technical institutes and training centers. The aim was to empower local workers. A Research Institute of Natural Resources and an Anthropological Institute were planned. These reflected a commitment to the Amazonian ecosystem. They also displayed a dedication to understanding its people.

The journey to becoming a functioning institution was far from easy. A Board of Directors was created. They had to formulate the organization’s plan. They had to find funding and establish operations. The Preliminary Statute was approved in 1962. It comprised seven titles and 118 articles. This marked a significant step forward for UNAP.

The inaugural ceremony was a momentous event. It took place in the Ramón Castilla Hall of the Maynas Provincial Council. Dr Eduardo de Souza Peixoto H presided. Authorities and the general public were in attendance. The first academic year began on June 4 1962. Dr Emilio Gordillo Angulo directed the School of General Studies.

The UNAP evolved over time. The initial “schools” became “faculties.” Later they were reorganized into “academic programs.” The system changed again in 1983 with the University Law 23733. This law restored the Faculty system. This system remains in effect today.

UNAP’s growth continued. New faculties were added. They spanned diverse fields including Agronomy Biological Sciences Education Economics and Business Forestry Law Political Science Nursing Pharmacy and Biochemistry. Even Food Industries Systems and Information Engineering Medicine Dentistry and Zootechnics were included. The university also boasts master’s and doctoral programs. It also hosts important research centers. The Centro de Investigaciones de Recursos Naturales and the Centro de Investigación de Lenguas Indígenas are examples of this. These centers highlight UNAP’s commitment to research. The research focuses on the Amazon’s natural resources and indigenous languages.

The UNAP has received recognition for its contributions. In 2018 the local community celebrated its achievements. Adela Jiménez Mera the mayor presented the recognition. This demonstrated strong community ties. The university continues to play a vital role. It shapes the future of the Amazon region. It does this through education research and community engagement. The UNAP’s story is one of growth resilience and significant impact on Iquitos and beyond.
