What if I told you that the very ground we stand on pulsates with the energy of thousands of dreams? This is the Universidad Autónoma de Occidente, a place where innovation sparks and futures are forged. Founded in 1970, the Universidad Autónoma de Occidente, or UAO as it’s affectionately known, began its life not here, but in the Champagnat neighborhood. It wasn’t until 1999 that this vibrant campus, nestled in the Valle del Lili area, became its home. The UAO isn’t just a university; it’s a testament to the power of dreams. It started as a non-profit, private institution. Now it boasts a student body of around 10,000 undergraduates, guided by roughly 1,000 professors and supported by 540 dedicated staff members. Imagine the collective brilliance within these walls. The UAO offers 20 undergraduate programs. Of these, an impressive 14 have earned high-quality accreditation from the National Accreditation Council. Two programs hold the prestigious Certqua certification from Germany. One program has even achieved international acclaim through Claep accreditation. Research is the lifeblood of any great university. The UAO pulses with it. There are 27 research groups recognized by Colciencias, Colombia’s administrative department of science, technology, and innovation. Two prominent research centers stand out: the Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of the Colombian Pacific Region (CIER) and the Center of Excellence in Materials. And let’s not forget the 73 laboratories, humming with the pursuit of discovery. The UAO is also a champion of sustainability. Certified in both ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, it’s recognized for its commitment to environmental responsibility. It even partners with the National Ministry of Mines and Energy on sustainable energy programs. In the University of Indonesia’s Green Metric World University Ranking, the UAO stands tall as the first private university in Colombia and the only one in the region to achieve this recognition. So, as you stand here, at the Universidad Autónoma de Occidente, remember that you’re not just at a university. You’re at a crucible of creativity, a hub of innovation, and a launchpad for dreams.
