Sergius P Lyon a layman arrived in Farmington Michigan in 1837. He wasted no time establishing a Universalist preaching station. This eventually became the Universalist Unitarian Church of Farmington. The church’s story is one of resilience and adaptation. It began as a rural meeting house. The original building constructed in 1853 stands as a testament to Lyon’s skill. He hand-hewed sixteen-inch beams. He let the wood cure for a year. The church’s longevity is a tribute to his craftsmanship.

Over 160 years the Universalist Unitarian Church of Farmington has witnessed significant changes. In 1866 members abandoned the old designation “Union Society”. They established “The First Universalist Church of Farmington”. The name changed again in 1961. It became “The Universalist-Unitarian Church of Farmington”. The building itself moved in 1967. It relocated from Warner & Thomas in Farmington to Halsted Road in Farmington Hills. This new location sits on land owned by Ethel and Harley Gibson.

The church has always been a place of open minds and tolerance. Sojourner Truth a renowned abolitionist spoke here against slavery in the 1860s. The church has welcomed people of diverse backgrounds.
