“Upward mobility and connection to roots.” These words from artist Hank Willis Thomas capture the essence of Unity. This monumental sculpture stands tall in Brooklyn. It embodies the spirit of this vibrant borough.

Unity is a 22.5-foot bronze sculpture. It features an arm and a pointing index finger. The artwork was unveiled in 2019. It quickly became a prominent landmark.

The sculpture’s creation was part of a broader revitalization project. The City’s Percent for Art program commissioned it. It is located at the intersection of Tillary and Adams Streets. This location welcomes travelers from the Brooklyn Bridge.

Thomas stated that Unity is a homage to Brooklyn’s unique character. He emphasized the borough’s spirit of upward mobility. He also noted its deep connection to its roots. The sculpture encourages people to literally look up. It serves as a call to action.

The artist worked closely with UAP Polich Tallix. This foundry is located in Rock Tavern New York. Together they brought the vision to life. A 3D file of the artwork was milled into foam patterns. Fine art bronze casting processes were then used. The sculpture received a patina finish. Finally it was transported to its installation site.

Unity echoes themes from Thomas’s previous works. Liberty is another sculpture by Thomas. It features a basketball spinning on a finger. It is inspired by a Harlem Globetrotter photograph. The arm was cast from NBA All-Star Juwan Howard. Liberty is now displayed in the Brooklyn Museum.

Unity’s design was modeled after NBA athlete Joel Embiid’s arm and hand. The sculpture embodies ambition and perseverance. It communicates ideas about individual and collective identity.

Kendal Henry is the Director of the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs’ Percent for Art program. He said that Unity conveys uplift and hope. He added that it has a little bit of Brooklyn attitude.

Regina Myer is the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership President. She noted that Unity serves as a memorable landmark. She said that it is a symbol of Brooklyn’s triumphant spirit. The Downtown Brooklyn Partnership maintains the artwork.

Unity stands as a symbol of Brooklyn’s spirit. It reminds us of togetherness. It inspires persistence and possibility. So take a moment to look up at Unity. Reflect on Brooklyn’s vibrant character. Consider its ongoing journey of growth and unity.
