What if a church building could tell tales? The Unity Baptist Church here in Las Vegas certainly could. Its story isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about faith, perseverance, and a community’s unwavering spirit. Unity Baptist Church stands as a testament to the power of dreams and the dedication of its members. In 2014, the congregation embarked on a short but significant journey. They marched from their original building at 545 Marion Drive to their new, larger home right next door at 543 Marion Drive. This move, though physically short, represented a long and challenging journey for the Unity Baptist Church. Reverend Raymond L. Giddens Sr. spearheaded the project, taking the existing plans and praying over them, envisioning a greater space for his growing congregation. The church raised an impressive $1.7 million through their own fundraising efforts, a testament to their commitment. Groundbreaking began in 2011, but the road wasn’t easy. Unexpected costs and loan difficulties arose, testing the church’s resolve. Yet, they persevered, driven by their faith and the belief that God wouldn’t forsake them. The new Unity Baptist Church, costing nearly $3.7 million, finally opened its doors. It boasts ten large classrooms and a fellowship hall with a capacity of over 400. The entire church can accommodate around 700 people, a significant increase from their previous space where church meals had to be served in shifts. The vision for the Unity Baptist Church extends beyond its walls. Reverend Giddens envisioned a space that served the community seven days a week. Plans included a preschool and a safe haven for families involved with the court system, offering a much-needed alternative to meetings in fast-food restaurants. The church has a history of community involvement, actively participating in the Mayor’s Faith Initiative and addressing homelessness in partnership with the Metropolitan Police Department. From its humble beginnings in 1981 with just thirteen members meeting in the home of Reverend Fletcher E. Harris, Unity Baptist Church has grown exponentially. It has occupied various locations, including a space at UNLV and a union hall, before finally settling at 545 Marion Drive. The new building represents the culmination of years of growth and unwavering faith. It’s a place where the community can gather, worship, and continue to serve, embodying the very spirit of unity.
