From the hilltop perch of Uniting Church Kennedy Terrace, one can almost feel the echoes of Brisbane’s past. How many souls, I wonder, have sought solace within these brick walls? Uniting Church Kennedy Terrace stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Paddington community. Completed in 1920, the church replaced an earlier Methodist structure built in 1884. The growth of Paddington necessitated a larger space, and this elegant brick edifice, designed by Lange Powell, rose to meet the need. Powell, son of a Methodist minister, left his architectural mark on Brisbane with buildings like the Masonic Temple and St. Martin’s Hospital. Uniting Church Kennedy Terrace showcases his skill with English Bond brickwork, buttressed sidewalls, and a corrugated iron roof. This church wasn’t simply built; it evolved alongside Paddington. The arrival of electric trams in the early 1900s fueled the suburb’s expansion. Uniting Church Kennedy Terrace bore witness to this transformation. Initially part of the Albert Street Circuit, it shifted allegiances as Brisbane’s Methodist community grew. By 1924, it stood alone as a single church circuit. In 1933, a “Jubilee Wall” was added, complete with gates opened by former Lord Mayor William Jolly. This wall, with its memorial tablets, honors key figures like Mrs. F.G. Harris and Mr. W. Gricks, founders of the Sunday School in 1883. It also remembers W.J. Abraham, who led the choir for 53 years, and P.W. Fulcher, organist from 1906 to 1961. In 1977, with the formation of the Uniting Church, this building became the heart of the Fernberg Parish. The spirit of community, fostered for over a century, continues to resonate within Uniting Church Kennedy Terrace.
