Behind these walls lies a history. The United States Penitentiary, Atlanta once held some of the most notorious criminals in American history. This is a place where lives intersected. Some sought redemption. Others embraced infamy.

The Atlanta Federal Penitentiary opened its doors in 1902. It was authorized by President William McKinley in 1899. Construction finished three years later. Six convicts transferred from Sing Sing Correctional Facility in New York.

The United States Penitentiary, Atlanta was born from the Three Prisons Act of 1891. This act also created the Federal Prison System. Atlanta and Leavenworth are the only two facilities still open today. McNeil Island closed in 1976. For a time, the Atlanta facility was the largest federal prison. It held 3,000 inmates. The facility was renamed United States Penitentiary, Atlanta in 1930.

Many notable inmates have resided within these walls. Al Capone. Whitey Bulger. Carlo Ponzi. Their stories echo through these corridors.

The United States Penitentiary, Atlanta underwent remodeling in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Today, it is a medium-security federal prison. But the imposing wall remains. It is a constant reminder of its past.

The Atlanta Federal Penitentiary also served as a detention center. In the 1980s, Cuban refugees from the Mariel Boatlift were housed here. They were deemed ineligible for release into American society.

The USP Atlanta also experienced a major riot. In November 1987, Cuban detainees rioted. They were tired of indefinite confinement and the fear of deportation. The riot lasted 11 days. Inmates seized hostages. They set fire to the prison.

Giuseppe Morello entered USP Atlanta in 1910. He was the head of the 107th Street Mob. Ignazio Lupo was also an inmate. He was a founder of the Morello crime family. Whitey Bulger arrived in 1956. He later transferred to Alcatraz.

Al Capone. The infamous leader of the Chicago Outfit. He was transferred to Alcatraz in 1934. Carlo Ponzi. Inventor of the Ponzi scheme. He was convicted of mail fraud in 1920. Eugene V. Debs. A founding member of the Industrial Workers of the World. He was convicted of sedition in 1918.
