The United States Consulate General Guangzhou initially operated in Canton. Major Samuel Shaw a Revolutionary War veteran was its first consul. He advocated for a formal consular presence here arguing that it would provide essential services and respect to American citizens. Trade played a significant role in the consulate’s early years. American merchants were initially restricted to the Canton port and factory compounds. The Opium War however forced China to expand trading opportunities. The 1844 Treaty of Wanghia negotiated by Caleb Cushing granted American merchants greater access to Chinese markets. It cemented the consulate’s importance in protecting American interests.

The consulate wasn’t always located here. For a time it resided on Shamian Island a Western enclave. This peaceful haven contrasted sharply with the unrest in mainland China. The Second Sino-Japanese War led to its temporary closure. Later it briefly served as the State Department’s Office of Embassy.

The consulate’s reopening in 1979 marked a significant turning point. It coincided with the normalization of US-China relations. Vice President Walter Mondale unveiled the consulate’s seal in the Dongfang Hotel. Richard L Williams became the first Consul General since 1949. The consulate’s move to its current location in Zhujiang New Town in 2013 signified renewed commitment and investment.

Today the United States Consulate General Guangzhou plays a vital role. It processes over one million visa applications annually more than 27000 in 1979. This includes immigrant and non-immigrant visas and adoptions. It serves the vast southern region of China including Guangdong Hainan Fujian and Guangxi impacting over 220 million people.
